2017 World Conference on Drowning Prevention

Golden West’s Swim for Life Vietnam was delighted to have former volunteers Beth Kreitl and Kevin Espirito present at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Vancouver, Canada in October. The presentation featured a very successful collaboration between Quang Binh’s Department of Education, Swim for Life Vietnam, Swim Vietnam, and Indiana University’s School of Public Health. The presentation highlighted program results for the Water Safety Program delivered to 72,000 primary students in Vietnam in 2017 and will implemented again in 2018. We’re teaching our students how to be safe around water, how to identify dangerous places, and how to conduct self-rescue and rescue of others. Because we are collecting pre/post outcomes, we are also able to conduct research to measure the effectiveness of the program in terms of learning and behavioral outcomes.

Additionally, Swim for Life Vietnam was represented in a joint presentation which featured the newly developed INGO Collaborative. Swim Vietnam and Water Safety Vietnam highlighted the collective impact we have made in our respective provinces. They also shared about the recent accomplishments of the group’s efforts in advising the government on a national swim curriculum. We are eager to continue these efforts as Bloomberg invests millions of dollars saving the lives of children through drowning prevention in Vietnam. Swim for Life Vietnam is poised and ready to serve as technical partners and on-the-ground experts.
