Military Explosives of Concern

Not all explosive hazards are the same — and not all organisations are equipped to deal with the full range. Military Explosives of Concern is a broad category that spans intact, identifiable ordnance through to degraded and previously unseen items, all the way to invisible chemical contamination in soil and water. Each type presents different risks, requires different detection methods, and demands different disposal approaches.

Golden West brings end-to-end MEC capability — from initial survey and hazard identification through remediation and safe final disposal. We hold the full range of licences required for ‘cradle to grave’ operations and work to both MEC standards and the IMAS Battlefield Area Clearance process, with the client determining which framework best fits local legal and operational requirements.

The Range of Threats We Address

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)

Bombs, shells, rockets, grenades, and submunitions that were fired or dropped but failed to function as intended. These items remain armed and can detonate under pressure, heat, or movement decades after they were deployed. They are found on former battlefields, in agricultural land, under construction sites, and in waterways across the world.

Discarded Military Munitions (DMM)

Munitions that were intentionally abandoned — buried, dumped, or left behind during military withdrawals. Unlike UXO, these items were never intended to function, but their condition after years or decades underground or underwater can make them equally dangerous, often more so.

Munitions Constituents (MC)

Explosive or toxic chemicals present in soil or water at concentrations that pose a risk of detonation or serious environmental harm. MC contamination is common at former testing ranges and manufacturing sites, and requires specialist assessment and remediation approaches distinct from those used for intact ordnance.

Why 'Cradle to Grave' Matters

Many organisations can locate ordnance. Fewer can safely identify, transport, and dispose of what they find — particularly when items are unusual, degraded, or previously unseen. Golden West’s fully licensed end-to-end capability means a single trusted partner manages the entire process, reducing handover risk, ensuring consistent technical standards, and delivering clear accountability at every stage.

Our use of the Mobile Cutting System (MCS) and other low-order disposal techniques means we can eliminate hazards without resorting to open detonation — reducing noise, blast, and environmental damage in areas where communities live and work alongside clearance operations.
