AAR OVAI DPAA Missions To Cambodia, August 2023

Golden West recently completed an OVAI DPAA Missions to Cambodia. These missions could not have been done without the outstanding support of the Cambodian Government and the local Provincial Police Departments, the US Embassy in Cambodia, the Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency Partnerships (DPAA), and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF).

The joint efforts of Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc (OVAI) and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) in Cambodia saw the successful survey and operations at Sites 1619, 832, and 1722 (23-2). Golden West HF played a pivotal role, providing vital logistical support, including vehicles, medical aid, translation, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal expertise.

Before embarking on their mission to Site 1619, the team faced challenges with an old logging trail washed out by heavy rains. Determined to overcome the obstacles, they collaborated with Provincial Police Commander Banlung to create an improved trail, enabling access to the site.

In December, the team conducted a thorough survey, ensuring the route’s navigability for future operations. Despite facing rough terrain, deep stream crossings, and muddy conditions, they successfully reached the site. With the site prepared and marked, excavation efforts began, unearthing numerous aircraft parts, metallic and fabric materials, and possible bone fragments. Daily progress reports were sent to DPAA representatives to ensure proper cataloging and preservation of findings.

Next, the team turned their attention to Site 832, where anomalies were discovered during the DGPS search. Digging deeper, they uncovered intriguing artifacts that shed light on the past.

Site 1722 was identified as a cleared site by using the confirmation of a Vietnamese eyewitness who was a soldier on site during the battle. The witness confirmed a US personnel was at another crashed helicopter site, and the remains of a US military personnel had been recovered in a previous mission. As a result, the site was closed, but other sites in Cambodia will be surveyed by DPAA DET 1, OVAI and Golden West HF personnel.

The conclusion of mission 23-2 marked the triumphant success of excavations at Sites 1619 and 832. However, Site 1722 remains a potential subject for future recovery missions, underscoring the ongoing commitment to bringing heroes home.

The joint efforts of OVAI, DPAA, and Golden West HF showcased the relentless pursuit of honoring the fallen and preserving their legacies. Through their dedication and determination, these heroes of history continue to inspire and impact the lives of military professionals and the world at large.
