Golden West & Swim For Life Attend Drowning Prevention Conference in Vietnam

This week, our team are in Vietnam with our “Swim For Life” drowning prevention community program. GoldenWestHF and our dedicated ‘Swim for Life’ team are honored to be part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies “Initiative to Prevent Drowning” in Hanoi, Vietnam this week. We are proud to collaborate with partners from Vietnamese Government Agencies, Global Health Advocacy Initiative, WHO, and CDC Foundation as we join forces to make a real impact in saving children’s lives.

Our journey with Swim for Life Vietnam began in 2014 when we established this program in Quang Binh Province. What started as a research project investigating the effects of endemic flooding on unexploded munitions and landmines soon revealed an alarming truth — the unacceptably high rate of children drowning in the region demanded urgent action.

We took action by building two swimming pools in Quang Binh and working closely with local schools to provide essential survival swimming instruction. Our vision was clear: focus community attention on drowning prevention and empower Vietnam to build the capacity needed to prevent child drownings. Swim for Life was designed to equip communities with survival swimming skills, water safety education, and heighten awareness within the community.

We partnered with Provincial DOFA, DOLISA, and DOET to engage two schools and construct the initial swimming pools on school property. Back then, public schools lacked such facilities. Fast forward to 2023, and we are immensely proud to share that there are now 72 swimming pools conducting swimming programs across Quang Binh. It’s a testament to the collective efforts of everyone involved.

Today, Swim for Life Vietnam collaborates with multiple local and Provincial government organizations, Youth Unions, Vietnamese Red Cross, educators, other NGOs, parents, and children—all united in our mission to reduce drownings in Vietnam. We are profoundly grateful for the invaluable support provided by Global Health Advocacy Incubator and Bloomberg Philanthropy, our grant and research partners, who have empowered us to enhance our drowning prevention programs in Quang Tri Province.

Our dream is to continue developing capacity in Quang Binh and Quang Tri while ultimately expanding into additional provinces. But we cannot do it alone. We call upon more organizations, individuals, and partners to join hands with us in this life-saving mission.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up safe and happy. Let’s work together, invest in our communities, and make drowning prevention a priority. Together, we can create a future where no child’s life is lost to drowning.

Together We Can Save Lives!
